Summer: heat, sun and storms

Long, hot days use up chlorine fastest, and summer is also the wettest stretch of the year here. After a heavy storm, skim the debris, check that the overflow line kept the level where it should be, and test before anyone swims. Hayward's manual advises super-chlorinating after a large amount of rain (Hayward), and a salt pool will need salt added back (see salt vs chlorine). When a hurricane is forecast, follow the storm checklist on our hurricanes page: the pool stays full.

The rare hard freeze

Freezes are short here, but they happen. The National Weather Service recorded 14°F at Beaumont–Port Arthur on February 16, 2021, during seven straight days at or below freezing from February 14 to 20, with lows averaging 25.1°F. On January 22, 2025, the low reached 11°F, tied for the second coldest on record behind 10°F in 1906 (NWS, NWS).

Moving water freezes more slowly, so Leslie's advises running the pump continuously through a freeze. If the power fails, it says to turn off the breakers and drain the pump, filter and heater so they don't crack (Leslie's). Ask your builder whether the automation has a freeze sensor, and where the drain plugs are, before the first cold front.

A green pool is a mosquito problem

Jefferson County Mosquito Control District warns that anything able to hold water for five days or more can breed mosquitoes. The district is at 8905 First Street in Beaumont, (409) 719-5940, and takes spray requests by phone or online (JCMCD). A neglected pool after a move or a storm evacuation is exactly that kind of water.

If the house will sit empty, keep the pump on a timer and ask a service to check it. Don't drain the pool to solve the problem: on wet clay, an empty shell can crack or lift.

Winter: the service window

Mild winters make December to February a good time for repairs, filter cleaning and equipment upgrades, since nobody misses the pool for a week. The catch is groundwater: USDA notes perched water close to the surface in League clay from January to March (USDA), so any job that lowers the water belongs with the builder. If you are weighing new equipment, our running-cost guide shows why the pump comes first.

Common questions

Do I need to close my pool for winter in Beaumont?

No. Winter highs here average in the mid-60s (NOAA), so pools run all year. Keep the pump on a daily schedule, clear leaves, and have a plan for the occasional hard freeze.

What should I do with my pool in a freeze?

Keep the pump running nonstop, because moving water freezes more slowly. If power goes out, switch off the breakers and drain the pump, filter and heater (Leslie's). Beaumont fell to 14°F in February 2021 (NWS).

Who do I call about a neighbor's green pool?

Jefferson County Mosquito Control District, (409) 719-5940, takes spray requests by phone or online and warns that standing water held five days or more can breed mosquitoes (JCMCD). Inside a city, code enforcement can also help.
